History of Villa d’Este on lake Como

Villa d’Este was built in 1568. Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio - influential statesman and Secretary of State under Pope Gregory XII - commissioned it as his personal summer residence in Cernobbio, on the western shore of lake Como.

Not everyone knows that Villa d’Este hasn’t always borne the name we know today. The name “Villa d’Este” was later given in honor of Vittoria Erba d’Este, a noble italian woman who bought the residence in 1815. However, originally, Villa d'Este was known as Villa del Garovo, referencing the little stream (Garovo) that flows nearby.

Not long after, in 1873, the estate was transformed into a luxury hotel, marking the beginning of its new life. Today, the complex includes historic buildings, gardens, and private villas. It also hosts annually the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, a world-renowned classic car show.

Villa d’Este is located in Cernobbio, just north of the town of Como. It is easily accessible from the lakeside road Via Regina or, more scenically, by private boat.
