A jewel of Lake Como: art, cinema, and the spirit of exploration
Villa del Balbaniello on lake Como is a mirror that reflects the personality of those who built and loved it. Commissioned by cardinal Durini, a late eighteenth-century scholar and patron, it went through the centuries until it landed in the hands of Guido Monzino, a twentieth century entrepreneur, collector and traveller. Walking through the corridors that connect the rooms of the mansion is like taking a journey through history among works of art and relics of all kinds.
In particular, it was Guido Monzino, its last owner, who transformed this wonderful place into a museum. As a matter of fact, a passionate explorer, during his travels around the world Monzino brought home precious relics, which are still exhibited in the villa today. Just to name a few: relics of primitive art (with African, pre-Columbian, Egyptian, Arcadian and Inuit specimens), maps, nineteenth-century prints with landscapes of Lake Como, books, carpets and rare eighteenth-century glass paintings.
On Monzino's death, by his will, the villa and its collections were donated to FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano, i.e. The National Trust for Italy), which still preserves it today.
Today, the villa is not only a historical landmark but also a cinematic icon, having served as the backdrop for major films such as Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones and James Bond – Casino Royale. Inside, visitors can admire original furnishings, precious antiques, and exhibitions celebrating exploration and adventure, all set within an atmosphere of refined elegance.
Our tours
Choose your destination, we will make sure you enjoy an exclusive and memorable experience.

Plan your visit: Villa del Balbianello by land or by lake
Villa del Balbianello on lake Como is owned and managed by FAI and is open to the public from mid-March to mid-November, with both garden and villa tours available. Tickets can be purchased online or at the entrance, although advance booking is strongly recommended during peak seasons.
The villa can be reached on foot via a panoramic forest path from the village of Lenno — a pleasant but steep 25-minute walk. However, the most exclusive and scenic way to arrive is undoubtedly by private taxi boat. Approaching the villa from the lake offers a truly unforgettable perspective: the elegant façade emerging from lush gardens, mirrored in the shimmering waters of Lake Como.
A private water taxi from Como city center or nearby docks offers the fastest, most exclusive option. It typically takes around 30–33 minutes to reach the villa’s private dock—comparable to a road taxi journey, but far more scenic. Choosing a private boat tour not only enhances the experience with comfort and style, but also grants direct access to the villa’s private dock — a privilege that elevates your visit from a simple excursion to a moment of pure Italian luxury.
